CARNIVAL GROUPS

The groups and collectives of the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife are inherent to the festival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and have been growing in number and modality, decade after decade.

The rondallas are the first manifestations of the musical groups that were created in the carnival environment. These groups focus their interpretation on different varieties of the lyric style, and work on the refinement of vocal technique. These groups are composed of soloists, choir and string instruments.

The murgas began to consolidate between the second and third decade of the twentieth century, quickly gaining popularity from the Winter Festivities. Originating in the various neighborhoods of the capital, these groups stand out for the critical and humorous nature of their lyrics, denouncing the socio-political reality through irony and satire.

Different musical and choreographic groups have been joining the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the last decades of the 20th century and embody the popular expression of enjoyment of the festivities through the interpretation and dance of Latin and modern musical styles.

One of the last groups to join the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife have been the groups participating in the contest “Canción de la Risa”, an event where the funniest staging is awarded.
