The first murga appeared in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1917, giving life, the following year, to these satirical groups of the Carnival. In this type of groups, everything is a caricature. They are usually the most expected element of the party because of the parody of their wind instruments, their clothes, usually clowns or mockeries of professions or characters, their clown makeup, and, mainly, their repertoire, with humorous and critical lyrics, full of irony, satire and double meaning.
Their contest has been held since 1961, where female murgas have also participated since 1972, when the first one was founded. There have been children’s murgas since the beginning of the 1920s, although they have had their own competition since 1972.
